Account Security

Duo is required for students

Duo two-factor authentication helps protect student information and is required when signing in to Cardinal Students and other protected University services.

Students most commonly use Duo for:

  • Cardinal Students
  • The Catholic-STU virtual private network, also called VPN
  • Other protected University services when access is assigned
Google 2-Step Verification and Duo are separate. Students must set up both. Completing one does not complete the other.

Use the Duo self-service portal when:

  • You get a new phone
  • Duo Push stops working
  • You reinstall or reset the Duo Mobile app
  • You need to add, change, or remove a registered device
If you cannot verify with any registered Duo method, or you no longer have access to your registered phone, contact the Service Desk for help regaining access.

Protect Your Accounts

Set up both security systems and keep your recovery options ready before you need them.

Change Your Cardinal Password

Have all of your devices nearby before changing your password. After the change, update the saved password on Wi-Fi, mail apps, browsers, phones, tablets, and computers.

Devices that continue trying to use your old password may temporarily lock your account.

Google 2-Step Verification

Google 2-Step Verification is required for Cardinal Mail and the University Google Workspace account.

  1. Open your Google Account.
  2. Select Security.
  3. Select 2-Step Verification.
  4. Follow the setup prompts.
  5. Create and securely save backup codes.

Connect to Campus

Use CUA-Secure for student devices. A wired connection is often the best choice in a residence hall for gaming, large downloads, streaming, and video calls.

CUA-Secure Wi-Fi

Connect using your Cardinal username and password. CUA-Guest is intended for visitors and provides more limited access.

If your device keeps joining CUA-Guest, forget that network and then join CUA-Secure.

Wired Residence Hall Internet

  1. Locate the network wall port in your room.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable to the port marked with a computer symbol or red indicator.
  3. Connect the cable to your computer or Ethernet adapter.
  4. Turn on or restart your computer and test the connection.

Network cables and adapters may be available through your Residence Hall Office.

Register TVs and Smart Devices

Devices without a normal web browser may need registration before they can connect in a residence hall.

This includes smart televisions, game consoles, streaming devices, and smart speakers. You will need the wired or wireless MAC address.
